Empowering clients to regain their independence
Meet Adam Nishi, an Occupational Therapist working in the Personalized Support and Stabilization Team Plus (PSS+).
In his role, Adam helps patients who have been recently hospitalized regain their independence and safety at home and in their communities. He ensures they have the right skills, tools and supports in place to meet their unique needs. “I feel fortunate to be part of their recovery journey, enabling them to re-learn and adapt to changes so they can continue to life their best life,” Adam says. “I love being in a role where each day can be so different.”
Collaborative, interdisciplinary team
Adam is part of an interdisciplinary team of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehab assistants, and administrative staff. Some of his most significant learning experiences come from discussions with his colleagues. “What I appreciate most about our team is the willingness to support each other,” Adam notes. “Leadership has also been very supportive in creating space for staff to voice their ideas and contribute to the ongoing development of the team.”
Continuous learning
Having joined the PSS+ team in its early years and watching the team evolve, Adam sees this as a testament to Vancouver Coastal Health’s commitment to innovation in care. His role, uniquely situated among acute care, home health and rehabilitation, has provided him with valuable learnings into a variety of health conditions and treatment approaches. He also values the various educational and professional development opportunities that VCH offers to staff.
Commitment to providing quality patient care
“My biggest motivator is the fulfillment of helping people recover and improve their quality of life. I try to approach each day with the mindset that every client could be my own family member or close friend, and I strive to provide the same level of care, compassion, and attention that I would want for them.” Recognizing that his clients and their families are experts in their own care, Adam collaborates with them to refine treatment plans based on their feedback.
Work-life balance
Adam’s rotating schedule gives him more time to enjoy his activities and hobbies during his days off, including exercising, spending time outdoors, and travelling. He appreciates the flexibility to attend appointments and run errands on weekdays, enhancing his overall well-being.
