Eve Kidd, Perioperative Nurse
It's Perioperative Nurses Week. Meet Eve Kidd, a perioperative nurse at UBC Hospital.
With dedication and passion, Eve collaborates with a diverse team to ensure patients receive the surgeries they require. “I enjoy seeing my colleagues and working hard to create a positive work environment for ourselves and our patients,” she says.
Where passion meets opportunity
In 2020, Eve discovered her passion for perioperative nursing. Through the specialty-training program offered by VCH, Eve seized the opportunity for employer-sponsored education, allowing her to expand her expertise in this field.
Eve’s patients inspire her. Especially the ones that extend their heartfelt gratitude to the surgical team. "It is a feeling that is unmatched in the world," she emphasizes, "and I am very thankful I get the opportunity to provide care and impact so many people in the community."
Power of unity
Eve values teamwork within the operating room. Her nursing colleagues diligently check-in to ensure everyone takes necessary breaks, while Clinical Resource Nurses offer support to learners, whether through double scrubbing or providing extra hands in the room. The leadership team’s commitment to fostering a valued team is evident through numerous survey opportunities, open discussions during staff meetings, and daily huddles.
Immersed in the core values of VCH - "We Care for Everyone, We Are Always Learning, and We Strive for Better Results," Eve emphasizes how these principles are deeply woven into the operating room structure. With a diverse and expansive patient population, the team is continually learning through quality improvement and the patient safety learning system. Eve affirms, "We strive for better results by constantly fine-tuning our processes."
UBC Hospital holds a special place in Eve's heart, as her favorite job to date. Expressing her gratitude, she notes, "The people make it an incredible place to work, and I feel very thankful." Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she contemplated leaving the nursing profession altogether. However, she credits her exceptional team for steering her away from that decision, stating that she can't imagine doing anything different now.
