Staff Spotlight
Kelly Yuill, Regional Respiratory Therapy Educator
We are excited to introduce Kelly Yuill, the Regional Respiratory Therapy Educator for New Grads and Employed Students at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
This is an exciting new role within the Regional Allied Health department that involves supporting new staff with less than 18 months of experience, and helping support Employed Student Respiratory Therapists (ESRT) during their working shifts to developing their skills.
Kelly’s role is to help bridge the gap between student, graduate, and registered respiratory therapists. She applied for the role because of her passion for teaching her fellow RTs. “I understand that transitioning from student to graduate RT can be stressful, so I hope to be a constant supporter during this time. I also feel like I can learn just as much from the ESRTs and new grads, as they can from me.”
About the Employed Student Respiratory Therapist (ESRT) Program
The new Employed Student Respiratory Therapist (ESRT) Program is a unique employment opportunity that aims to ease the transition from student to a new graduate respiratory therapist (RT). The program allows student RTs to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to hands-on scenarios, promoting independent learning.
Additionally, Kelly tells us, “the environment allows for collaboration so students can work alongside their future colleagues. The RT community is very small so to have additional exposure to staff in a professional working environment is amazing!”
With the creation of her new role, as well as another educator role taken on by Bianca Winograd, the duo excitedly shares, “We are excited to show everyone why VCH is the best place to begin your career as an RT!” Fun fact: Kelly and Bianca have worked together since they both first started as new grads at Vancouver General Hospital in 2017 and are looking forward to continuing their work together in their new roles.
