Monica Stevens, Medical Technologist
Meet Monica Stevens, a Supervisor for Laboratory/Diagnostic Imaging at both R. W. Large Memorial Hospital in Bella Bella and Bella Coola General Hospital on the Central Coast of beautiful B.C.
Originally from Haida Gwaii, Monica visited the Central Coast for two years before relocating to Bella Bella. With diverse experience in both large acute facilities and private labs, she wanted to purse her career in a rural setting where the work is both collaborative and provides a challenge.
“I love living here!” says Monica. “I’ve always wanted to work in the Great Bear Rainforest and now I get to enjoy ocean and mountain views and spend my weekends exploring out on the boat and fishing along the coast. Plus, the teams and community members have been so welcoming.”
In her role, Monica finds inspiration in the team incorporating VCH values (We Care for Everyone, We Are Always Learning and We Strive for Better Results) and protocols which contribute to the ongoing evolution of departments thus allowing team members to provide better and consistent care to the communities. “Currently I am working on implementing proven systems that work in diagnostic settings while participating in ongoing educational opportunities.”
“My peers and supervisors are hardworking and incredibly supportive,” says Monica. “It is a unique situation that requires much thinking outside of the box and working outside of the job description.” Being the supervisor of both acute sites, Monica holds weekly team huddles via Skype and travels to Bella Coola at least once every three months.
This year (2021) is Monica’s 25th year anniversary as a Medical Laboratory Technologist! “I still LOVE the profession and cannot imagine doing anything else.”
