Radiating Compassion, Knowledge, and Education for Quality Patient Care

Jaymie Campbell

It's MRT Week! Meet Jaymie Campbell, a dedicated Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) turned Clinical Educator whose journey from Ontario to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in 2009 was nothing short of a life-changing adventure.

In the bustling world of medical imaging and radiation treatments, where cutting-edge technology meets compassionate care, there's a remarkable team member who has illuminated the path of career progression.

The moment Jaymie set foot in British Columbia, she knew she had found her unique place on Earth. "B.C. always felt special to me," she reminisces. "It was a province I knew I wanted to move to as soon as I graduated, and I'm so glad I did."

Creating connections with patients and colleagues

Starting as an MRT at Vancouver General Hospital, Jaymie quickly realized that the heart of her profession lay in the connections she formed with her patients. "The part I enjoyed most [about my role as an MRT] was working with patients," she confesses. "Especially when I can ease their anxiety or make them feel more comfortable or confident after their examination."

But for Jaymie, it wasn't just about her patients. She believed in taking care of her colleagues, too. Her philosophy was simple but profound: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Jaymie reflects, “I think we can all tell when peers and leaders really embody a commitment to taking care of their people. I try and bring my best self to work everyday. My goal is to do my small part to create a workplace culture that values celebrating and caring for my colleagues.”

Taking advantage of education and training to grow her career

In July 2023, Jaymie seized an opportunity to embark on the next chapter of her career, donning the role of Regional Clinical Educator – General Radiology and CT, spanning the entire Lower Mainland. This achievement was the culmination of a series of small steps and decisions that had been building up over time. She emphasized the importance of saying “yes” to every opportunity that came her way, taking on temporary and casual jobs to expand her skills, and enrolling in courses to expand her knowledge.

Jaymie highly recommends the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP) offered by Vancouver Community College for those aspiring to grow into an Educator role. “It offers so much practical knowledge and can be applied for any educator role,” she says. “I was also was a faculty member at BCIT in the Medical Radiography program for years. I taught, and taught with, many current and former colleagues.”

Jaymie feels they need to “walk the talk” and take advantage of available learning opportunities. “We must look to learn and grow our own capabilities constantly,” she says. “VCH has so many learning opportunities – many of them online and self-paced – to grow skills in Leadership, Change Management, Feedback, and more.”

Finding an organization that aligns with your values

Her dedication to upholding VCH values is evident. As an MRT, she often found herself in situations demanding extensive problem-solving, where patient compliance was essential for accurate imaging. She stressed the importance of sharing tips and tricks among MRTs, echoing VCH's values of we care for everyone, we are always learning, and we strive for better results. "We love sharing ideas with each other" she expressed, reaffirming the spirit of collaboration.

However, Jaymie's humility shone through as she credited her peers and colleagues for some of her most valuable learning experiences. “I have sincere gratitude to more MRT’s than I could possibly name for sharing their creativity, “moon-shot” ideas, and next-level problem-solving skills. YOU are the inspiration!”

In the spirit of VCH, "We Care for Everyone" also includes caring for oneself. Jaymie pointed out the vital role played by the Wellness team, which provides support and a wide range of resources for employees' psychological health and wellness. She mentioned the LifeWorks EFAP (Employee Family Assistance Program) as a valuable resource that helped her maintain a healthy work-life balance.

In Jaymie's story, the field of MRTs becomes a vibrant career where professionalism meets compassion, colleagues become lifelong friends, and pursuing knowledge is a never-ending adventure. Jaymie Campbell's journey is a testament to the transformative power of dedication, collaboration, and the unwavering commitment to care for all.
