Sarah McCuaig, Sonographer
Sarah always knew she wanted to work in health care and was drawn to sonography because of the degree of knowledge of anatomy and physiology that’s required, and the fact that you spend a lot of time with patients.
"I love the variety of my job, I never know what kind of ultrasound I’m going to do next”
Sarah now works as a sonographer at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) in the radiology department, ER, and portability in the ICU. “We can scan pretty much any body part, and the technology is constantly changing. I love the variety of my job; I never know what kind of ultrasound I’m going to do next, and I learn something new every day,” says Sarah.
Inspiring work at VGH
She is inspired at work when sonographers “catch” things on ultrasounds by going above and beyond the routine scan. “We often adjust our ultrasounds based on where the patient hurts or if we see something incidentally, and this can have a huge impact on patient outcomes,” shares Sarah. – “We really all work together,” says Sarah, as she describes the ultrasound department at VGH. “There’s always someone offering to help with a scan – be it for a second opinion, to assist with a patient’s position, or just to maneuver a stretcher.”
She believes professional development and the VCH value “we are always learning” are important. “Whenever we have rounds or in-services at work, it gets me inspired. It makes me want to be better, and it keeps me engaged in my job.”
Sarah shared a fun fact about her profession. Did you know sonography uses sound to see? Just like how bats or whales use echolocation to map out their surroundings, ultrasound is used to “see” inside.
