He received his medical degree at Trinity College Dublin before training in general surgery at the University of Toronto.  During his time in Toronto, he discovered a passion for treating patients with injury and emergency surgical conditions.  This interest led him to complete a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health during his residency.  Following residency, he completed fellowships in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  He practiced as a trauma surgeon and intensivist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore before moving back to Vancouver, his hometown.

Dr. Byrne’s research interests are focused on improving the quality of trauma care at the hospital and trauma system levels.  His work specifically seeks to identify trauma processes of care that are associated with favourable patient outcomes.  He also studies how regional disparities in access to care and trauma system organization affect populations of people.
