Vancouver General Hospital is a major provider for solid organ transplant in British Columbia, and one of the largest in Canada, with over 100 transplants each year.
What the VCH transplant programs include
Kidney transplant
- Assessment of individuals who have end-stage organ failure, recipient and living donor
- Assessment of living donors (direct, paired exchange and anonymous donation)
- Pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care for recipient and living donor
Liver transplant
- Assessment of individuals who have end-stage organ failure, recipient and living donor
- Assessment of living donors for direct liver donation
- Pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care for recipient and living donor liver transplants
Lung transplant
- Assessment of individuals who have end-stage organ failure for lung transplant
- Pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care for lung transplant recipients
Pancreas transplant
- Assessment of individuals who have end-stage organ failure for pancreas transplant
- Pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care for pancreas transplant
Pancreatic islet transplant
- Assessment of individuals who have end-stage organ failure for pancreas transplant
- Pre-surgery, surgery and post-surgery care for pancreatic islet transplant
Our program also includes post-transplant care for management of the Provincial Waiting list.
How to access organ transplant services
- Potential organ transplant recipients are referred to the pre-transplant clinic through their health-care provider.
- Potential organ donors can contact the pre-transplant clinic directly.
- Organ transplant recipients can be referred to the post-transplant clinic by their health-care provider.
Costs
Some services are covered by your Medical Services Plan and others may not be.
Services covered:
- Pre-transplant care
- Transplant procedure
- Hospital stay
- Anti-rejection medication
- Post-transplant care
Services not covered:
- Travel expenses
- Accommodations
- Meals
- Parking
- Medications other than anti-rejection drugs
Donors may be reimbursed for travel and out-of-pocket expenses. Patients may be entitled to benefits from other sources such as Extended Health Benefits.
