Notable construction milestones achieved on new Paul Myers Tower at Lions Gate Hospital

It's been alm​ost two years since we began construction at the new Paul Myers Tower at Lions Gate Hospital and the site has been a hub of activity ever since. Once complete the new Tower will be a modernized facility for our staff and medical staff and support improved care for patients. ​

The project began in the spring of 2017, when the former North Vancouver General Hospital was demolished to make space for the future Paul Myers Tower. PCL Constructors West Coast Inc. was awarded the contract to design and build the facility and the team has made significant progress with the Tower beginning to take shape. This spring we achieved significant construction milestones including the completion of concrete pouring for all six floors and the roof.

“The Clinical and Facility teams have worked with the LGH front line staff, including our physicians, as well as our Community Engagement teams and Indigenous partners on a design that we are now seeing come together with the construction of the new facility, and there is much excitement as we see the building take shape," said Shelly Fleck, Chief Clinical Planning Officer VGH ＆ LGH Major Redevelopments. "As PCL focuses on the final construction of the building, the Redevelopment Project Team focus will shift to transitional planning and operational readiness, so that we can successfully see our first patients in the new facility in early 2025."

The construction progress reveals glimpses of the exceptional facilities soon to be enjoyed by medical staff and patients alike. Once complete, the new six-floor acute tower will include 108 single inpatient rooms, eight state-of-the-art operating rooms, 39 pre-operative and post-operative spaces, and a medical reprocessing department. There will be more spaces to support patients, family and staff well-being including lounges, an Elder in Residence Office, a Sacred Space, additional bike storage and a rooftop garden with a walking path. These new patient-centred spaces, virtual care-friendly workspaces, and innovative technologies will increase efficiencies for staff and will enable us to deliver the highest quality care possible to our growing and diverse Coastal community.​

Our final phase of construction will happen next year where our focus will be on the completion of operating and inpatient rooms, exterior finishes, landscaping and the completion of the courtyard. Our move into the new Tower with doors opening to patients in early 2025. Our project team continues to work closely in collaboration with the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations during all phases of the design process.
