Spring social creates opportunities to shine for older adults in Sechelt

Older adults in the Sechelt Adult Day Program

A spring-themed celebration held on Saturday, May 25, at the Vancouver Coastal Health Portside Adult Day Program located in Silverstone Care Centre allowed members to shine and community connections to bloom.

Adult Day Programs provide support for adults living with physical and/or cognitive impairment – including dementia – and want to keep living independently as long as possible. The Portside Adult Day Program provides support for more than 40 members and their families living in the Sechelt community.

At the first luncheon and concert in the program’s new location, members and their guests came together for a fun-filled afternoon, creating a relaxed and supportive setting that encouraged members to be themselves, regardless of cognitive and physical challenges.

“For Adult Day Program members, this was an occasion to be out in the community, celebrating life and an opportunity to forget some of the trials associated with the dementia journey,” explained Donna Levi, Recreation Therapist and Program Coordinator with the Portside Adult Day Program. “For their caregivers, this was a chance to connect with other caregivers in a positive environment and see their loved ones enjoy themselves in a social setting.”

The spring theme incorporated colorful floral centerpieces designed by the Adult Day Program’s Friday Ladies Group, burrito bowls, a trivia quiz sprinkled with fun facts about members, a sing-a-long led by musician Reg Dixon and lots of round-table socializing helped to make the day memorable – and worthy of an encore.

“It’s wonderful to see how everyone enjoyed having Reg lead a sing-a-long and play guitar,” shared new member George Lenz, who was joined by his wife Eleanor. “And it’s nice to witness people communicating with each other.”
