PeriOperative Anaphylaxis Clinic (POAC)
Related topics: Hospital care Surgery
The PeriOperative Anaphylaxis Clinic (POAC) is the first clinic in Canada to combine Anesthesiology specialists and allergy and immunology specialists assessing patients who have had severe reactions while receiving surgery.
What to expect
Currently, POAC is in the building phase, running a multidisciplinary clinic once per month to assess high-risk patients with complicated anaphylaxis reactions under anesthesia.
The clinic addresses the gap in care where patients who suffered perioperative events were left undiagnosed due to lack of:
- Drug access in outpatient community offices
- Access to charts.
- Formal training in drug-related reactions.
