Story
Richmond Hospital’s new healing space

Paving the way for enhanced mental health care, the new psychiatric assessment unit opens to patients - another major milestone on the Richmond Hospital Redevelopment Project.
We are proud to announce a significant milestone on the Richmond Hospital redevelopment journey. Construction of the psychiatric assessment unit (PAU), formerly known as the psychiatric emergency unit (PEU), is now complete. The PAU, located just outside the South Tower, welcomed its first patients today - Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
What's new in the relocated PAU
The new PAU features an improved unit layout that enhances flow and patient visibility. Patient care spaces now include ensuite washrooms, and additional features such as a walking loop, a multipurpose space, and an enclosed outdoor patio have been incorporated. Its close proximity to the emergency department ensures a safe and seamless journey for patients.
Healing design elements
A people-first approach guided every design decision in this project. The design team, in collaboration with VCH’s Indigenous Health team, selected a soothing blue/green colour palette to create a calming environment while using colour to distinguish between common areas and patient care spaces. Thoughtfully placed windows maximize natural light, a feature that lifts moods and helps reduce stress. The secure walking loop and the outdoor patio—designed with panels that mimic water ripples—offer therapeutic benefits and a connection to nature.
Staff voices add a personal touch to this milestone. Lisa Ramage, Operations Manager, Mental Health & Substance Use, Richmond, who was present at the very first opening of the psychiatric assessment unit at Richmond Hospital, shared her heartfelt thoughts:
“Being here today reminds me of how far we have come. This space not only transforms patient care but also reflects our commitment to compassionate and innovative healing environments.”
Sarbi Aujla, Operations Director, Mental Health & Substance Use, Richmond, highlighted the importance of normalizing mental health support. She explained:
“Psychiatric assessment units have long been associated with stigma. Our focus here is to redefine that narrative by creating a space with natural light, clear visibility, and design choices that remove barriers and emphasize healing rather than confinement.”
Why the PAU is relocating
This relocation supports the next phase of redevelopment, as the Park Centre building is scheduled for demolition. This will clear the way for the new nine-floor acute care tower, the Yurkovich Family Pavilion.
