Vancouver Coastal Health upgrades the in-patient acute mental health unit at Richmond Hospital

Richmond Hospital In Patient Acute Mental Health Unit

Richmond, B.C. – Vancouver Coastal Health has begun renovating the in-patient acute mental health unit at Richmond Hospital, upgrading the space to improve overall patient experience and safety, and providing leading mental health care support for the Richmond community.

"The upgrades to the in-patient acute mental health unit at Richmond Hospital will help patients have a bigger, better space that will improve the way they access mental health services at the hospital," said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. "I thank Vancouver Coastal Health, the Richmond Hospital Foundation and all those who are contributing to this renovation."

Located on the second floor at Richmond Hospital, the 10,000 square foot in-patient acute mental health unit currently has 18 beds, and serves more than 250 patients each year. The renovation will see a range of modifications made to the space, including a new kitchen, family dining area, multifunctional activity room, patient and family lounge, as well as new furniture, lighting and décor that promotes a welcoming and nurturing home-like experience. The in-patient acute mental health unit is scheduled to re-open late 2021.

"Our goal is to be at the forefront in providing excellent care to those experiencing mental health issues," says Karen Barclay, Director, Richmond Mental Health and Substance Use at Vancouver Coastal Health-Richmond. "The renovations create a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment, reducing the stigma of mental illness by ensuring dignity and respect for patients and families."

“A more welcoming, home-like atmosphere will support Richmond-area people seeking in-patient mental health care,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “Thanks to everyone supporting this Richmond hospital renovation, partnering with us to protect and promote mental health.”

Funding for the mental health unit renovation is supported by Richmond Hospital Foundation. Learn more about their $1.25M fundraising campaign at https://www.richmondhospitalfoundation.com/why-give/.
